Engine and exhaust - contamination:
- The engine should be dry (not soiled with oil) and may not make black smoke or noice.
- The tailpipe/ exhaust pipe must be fitted firmly and must not have holes, and cannot make noise and smoke black.
- There must be sufficient engine oil. Check this by pulling up the dipstick (is often yellow), and wipe it clean. Wait a few minutes to allow the oil sink to the bottom. Now plug in the dipstick, and pull it up again. Now you read the level which must be between min. and max.
- There must also be sufficient coolant. Usually a visible container in the engine compartment which can be read. The fluid level must be between min. and max.
Vision:
- Glazing should be clean and transparent.
- Wipers should be in good condition, so visibility is ensured in the rain.
- There must be sufficient washer fluid to the trip you want to drive.
Tires and rims:
- Tire and wheel rims must be intact/ undamaged and properly fastened secured.
- All four tires must have at least 1.6 mm depth in the main pattern.
- All 4 tires must be of the same type (eg. Summer/ winter/ studded tires).
- Studded tires may be used from November 1st to April 15th.
- It is legal to mount tires in pairs one such mixing two brands on two axles.
- Tires should be inflated to the proper pressure (can be found in your owner's manual or in the front passenger door or fuel door).
- Tires should be mounted such that possible rotation indication is followed -look for arrow on wall side of the tire.
- NOTE. Before you drive abroad during winter, check the country's rules for tyre requirements on: http://www.fdm.dk/biler/biludstyr/daek/regler-vinterdaek-udlandet
Shock absorbers:
- Checked by pressing down abrupt and firm over the car's four corners.
- Corner that is pressed should immediately be quiet.
- If possible, additional check for oil spills on them (no requirements for the driving test).
Steering:
- The steering device shall be operable Easy, Secure and Fast.
- The steering equipment must be self-aligning the car automatically want to run straight ahead). As you turn the steering wheel should be no murmurs.
- There must be no backlash gearing/ play (backlash gearing is the possible movement that can be made before the front wheels are turning).
- Checking the backlash gearing is performed with the engine running. The slightest movement of the steering wheel must move the front wheels on both sides. The test is performed by standing outside with open door and turning on the steering wheel. Upon check it is best that the wheels are in a straightforward position. Right front wheel can only be checked with a helper.
- Most cars have electric power steering = no checking, but some vehicles have hydraulic power steering, and then there will be a bottle in the engine compartment for hydraulic servo liquid, where the fluid level must be between minimum and maximum. The driver must know what type of assisted/power steering the car has.!
Brakes:
- Normal brake (Foot brake):
- Must be able to brake the car Fast, Safe and Effective at all speeds and loads.
- Must be a 2 circuit hydraulic braking system (hydraulic = fluid pressure) that acts on all four wheels.
- If one circuit fails, the other circuit acts as emergency brake.
- If one circuit fails, you feel that the brake pedal can be depressed further than normal. In this case further driving is prohibited.!
- If the brakes fail in an antique car with only one brake circuit, the handbrake is used as an emergency brake.
The parking brake (handbrake):
- Must be mechanically and work on both rear wheels.
- Must be able to keep the car stopped on a steep hill, and must be locked when it is drawn up (it is unlocked by pressing the button).
Checking the normal brake (foot brake):
- The brake pedal must have a non-slip surface.
- The brake pedal cannot be loose and move from side to side.
- The brake pedal should feel firm and solid.
- The brake pedal must not be pressed close to car floor.
- The brake pedal should not sink at constant pressure.
- The brake pedal must have around 1 cm clearance before braking starts.
Checking the vacuum amplifier/ brake servo:
- Pump the brake pedal 3-4 times with the engine off (it should pump itself upwards).
- Keep the pedal depressed.
- The engine is then started while the brake pedal is depressed.
- When the engine is running the pedal should now sink to its original position = vacuum amplifier works.
Brake fluid:
- Tank/ bottle level must be between minimum and maximum.
- Never fill with brake fluid (requires a professional).
Lights:
General requirements for lamps:
- There must be the same strength and colour in the lamps in pairs (change bulbs in pairs).
- All lenses must be clean and undamaged.
- Lights must be approved (must have an E approval code written in glass).
- Bulbs must be mounted correctly in the socket.
- All lights to work.!
- There are two of all lights, except for turn signals (6 pcs.) And brake light (3 pcs.).
Position Lights/ side lights/ parking lights:
- White or yellowish light.
- Must be able to be seen at least 300 meters.
- Cannot be blinding/ dazzling.
Dipped beam/ low beam lamps:
- White or yellowish light.
- Must light up the road at least 30 meters in front of the car.
- Cannot be blinding/ dazzling.
- Must be asymmetric, lightening more to right.
- The light must have a fall/ dip of 1%.
- To check dip decrease of 1%: The car must stand on a flat surface. Stand close to the lamp and mark with your finger on your leg the light upper edge. Go 1 meter away from the lamp, now light top edge must have fallen by 1 cm. It is obvious that this is more precise with a ruler.
Main-beam headlamps/ long lights/ head lights:
- White or yellowish light.
- Must light up the road at least 100 meters ahead.
- They may seem dazzling/blinding (used of course only when you are alone on the road (thats why they may blind (you are not blinding when using correct))).
- Must have a blue indicator light on the instrument panel.
Taillights/ rear lights:
- Red light.
- Must be able to be seen at least 300 meters.
- Cannot be blinding/ dazzling.
Brake lights / stop lamps:
- Red light.
- There should be three.
- These light must be stronger than the taillights.
- Cannot be blinding/ dazzling.
- Brake can only be checked with a helper.
Reflexes/ reflectors, real/tail:
- Must be red - sitting back.
- Cannot be triangular.
License plate lights:
- There must be at least one lamp.
- It must be a white light.
- The light must be so strong that the license plate can be read from at least 20 meters.
Turn indicator lights:
- There must be 6 lamps, two front, two sides and two rear.
- Yellow/ orange light.
- Must also be seen in sunlight.
- Should flash 60-120 times per minute (1-2 times per second).
Hazard warning signal:
- The button must be designated and found by the driver (usually red with a triangle).
Daytime running lights (DRL):
(Not part of the run sample questions).
Newer cars is fitted with automated driving LED lights during daytime. It may also be that the car is using dipped headlights (low beam) or fog lights as daytime running lights.
Daytime running lights – in particular when its LED, unfortunately don’t turn on the rear/ tail lights of the vehicle. It is therefore particularly important that driver is aware of light/ visibility conditions such as daytime conditions, and lightening up conditions such as sun gone down to the sun has rises, fog, mist, rain, snow and at sunset.
Horn:
- The horn should have a high and constant tone (usually sits in the middle of steering wheel).
Documents:
- In Denmark, it is only necessary to have car registration papers of the car as copies if driving with a trailer.
- Driving abroad, you must always be carry the original registration papers.
Warning triangle and yellow safety vest:
In case of breakdown/ accident a warning triangle must be placed 50m behind the car on an ordinary road and 100m on a motorway.
Always have at least a one yellow safety vest in the car, close to the driver (requirements abroad). Hazard warning lights is required to be activated on breakdowns/ accidents.
Towing a vehicle:
- A maximum distance of 4 meters between the two cars.
- Speed is restricted to 30 km/h.
- Towing is not allowed on the motortrafficway and motorway.
Goods/ cargo/ passengers:
Dimensions:
- max. sizes: Length 12m.,
- height 4m,
- width 2.55m
- and 3.500kg.
Cargo must be max 15 cm beyond the vehicle widest point, or not more than 2.55 m being the widest allowed (exceeding 2.55 the use of rotating yellow light is compulsory). The same applies if goods have a height exceeding 4 meters.
If goods are more than 1m longer than the car's nose or end, this must marked with something that can be an empty carrier bag from the supermarket or a T-shirt.
A B-license is valid for up to 8 passengers, where all in the vehicle must be sat comfortable using safety belt.
The hook used for trailers should on normal family cars not be loaded with more than 50kg.
